Drum Dynasty: Mystic Sunrise and Dark Continent (two CDs)
www.drumdynasty.com
All the songs were written by Bruce Burgess and Kevin Christiansen. Musical samples were used courtesy of Spectrasonics “Heart of Africa.” Neither the precise instrumentation nor players are noted, so I have to assume that in addition to world drums, we are hearing exotic instruments, sitar, and real
voices - all in that haunting, digital studio world. The website notes the exploration of African, Algerian, Haitian, Greek and Arabic rhythms (with hints of much more). Whatever the source of sounds, the effect is a mesmerizing interplay of new age production, wailing voices and ancestral reeds. The recording is superb and the overall effect is enchanting. The variety of rhythms, syncopation, and orchestral compositions makes for an unusual afternoon of listening. The two CD set totals 97 minutes. The drums are mic’d with precision and reveal hands that can deliver as good as any other instrument. This is very interesting stuff all performed and mixed locally in Seattle and a credit to the studios. [J.W. McClure]
